To coexist. According to the Cambridge dictionary it means: to live or exist together at the same time or in the same place.
The prefix of this verb co- comes from Latin and it means "together, with". Exist, on the other hand, became part of the English vocabulary around c. 1600 through French from Latin "to step out, stand forth, emerge, appear, exist, be".
If I’m writing this, it’s not to teach you linguistics but rather because this verb is important for us in this day and age – now more than ever!
In a world where we are bombarded by news of countries at war, ideologically and socially divided populations, and of mass destruction of species, I think we all need to learn about coexisting.
For this reason, I will meet people from around the world who are making a change (in small and big ways), people who are committed to coexist with one another and create spaces where differences bring us together instead of tearing us apart.
For 2024, I want to tell their stories and share them with you. If that sounds good to you, keep your eyes open for the next articles on my blog.
